Released in 1961, “Crying” is a landmark of operatic rock co-written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson. The song famously subverted the “tough guy” tropes of the era by featuring a male protagonist openly weeping over a lost love. Eschewing a traditional verse-chorus structure, it uses a dramatic, “bolero-style” build-up that showcases Orbison’s extraordinary vocal range and emotional vulnerability.
